Good SEO should be long term, white hat and not completely dependent on Google AdWords.
With the rise of today's technology, a number of bad and dodgy practices have come into play that can seriously put your website at risk from being banned in the search engines - no questions asked. The constant shift of techniques and 'state of flux' the search engines remain in makes it difficult to differentiate between good and bad SEO.
Bad SEO techniques are still pretty easy to spot. The technique is known as 'black hat SEO' and it puts your website on the front line to be shot down by the big G if you are caught exerting these techniques.
The old school black hatters will know the techniques to get short wins to increase search engine rankings - definitely not good SEO, and something I can't talk about in this article due to editorial guidelines.
So what is Good SEO?
Well, you should start by thinking about your users, and the visitors to your website. If you build the website for people, write interesting and informative content for real humans and not robots, then you are on the right track with developing a long term, organic web presence.
Good SEO takes time, which is why a number of website ideas tend to lose faith and move over to other practices to get the quick fix results - like paid advertising for example.
Think about getting your keywords in the content, adding frequent updates and have a good amount of high quality inbound backlinks from relevant websites - all good SEO.
