Search Engine Optimization - SEO Basics

In order to make use of SEO, you need to understand it better. And in order to do that, you need to know a few basic terms commonly used in SEO.

Search engines - a program designed to search for information on the World Wide Web

World Wide Web - an application running on the internet which consists of interconnected documents and other information resources

Internet - a series of interconnected computer networks that contains the World Wide Web

Confusing? To simplify, a group of computers connected to each other comprises a computer network. These computer networks when connected globally, becomes the internet. The World Wide Web on the other hand is the application running on these interconnected computer networks. Contained on this application is a vast resource of documents and information. Because of the huge amount of information contained in the web, search engines were created to make searching and retrieving for information easier.

But how do search engines actually work? How can it retrieve specific information from a resource as vast the World Wide Web, estimated to contain 21.28 billion pages as of this writing?

To understand better, we need to know the following:

Web Crawling - web crawling is done by a computer program called a web crawler which goes through the World Wide Web methodically and automatically. Other names given to web crawlers are: spiders, robots (bots), automatic indexers, ants, and worms. Think of web crawling as systematically reading through everything stored in the web.

Indexing - once a page in the web is crawled by spiders, it will be indexed and data collected and parsed from that page is stored in an index database.

Search Query - this is what users enter into search engines' search box to search for certain information

Search engines typically work in this manner. The World Wide Web is crawled, indexed, and the data collected stored in a database. Then, when users enter a query into the search engine, the engine would search its index for web pages that best matches the search criteria provided by the user. It then provides a listing of these matches, known as the search results. Search results provided contain a short summary of the page, the document's title, and some part of the document's text.

A search engine's reliability and authority depends on its ability to give the user results which is relevant to the user's search or query. A business' online visibility and profitability on the other hand depends on ranking high on search results. SEO works on both ends of the field. Making web pages appear on relevant searches, and making those web pages rank high in search engines. Search engines rank web pages differently, varying from one engine to another. While all search engines' algorithms are kept secret (to curb attempts to manipulate it), there are some standards all search engines stick to when ranking web pages according to its relevance on a given topic, keyword, or search query.

The role of SEO in increasing online profits

As mentioned in the first article, SEO does and is capable of increasing online profits. SEO, when used correctly, can and will bring more traffic to a website. As discussed earlier, SEO is just another form of advertising, albeit one that isn't intrusive, and works in reverse of most targeted advertising. Since SEO is just another form of advertising, it will of course net results that all advertising gives; which is to bring in more customers or potential customers.

While an increase in traffic means the consuming public is now aware of your site's existence, that doesn't automatically translate into immediate profit. Remember that hooking audiences in is just part of the sales process. You still need to convert those visitors into paying customers or consumers of your product or services. However, as a rule of thumb, attracting more visitors to your website will of course mean a larger number of possible customers. And this is exactly the role that SEO performs - to bring more traffic to your site.

Starting SEO from scratch

To start with your website's optimization, you first need to identify the most common keywords being used by searchers to look for products and services related to your business.

For example, as a furniture seller, you will need to identify what keywords searchers use to look for products and services related to furniture. A search in Google will turn up the following keywords most commonly used for searches with the word "furniture."

bedroom furniture, home furniture, modern furniture, office furniture, furniture design wood furniture, indian furniture, ikea.

A search in Yahoo on the other hand will turn up the following keywords:

ashley furniture, furniture stores, value city furniture, office furniture, ikea furniture, bedroom furniture, patio furniture, thomasville furniture, wickes furniture, bassett furniture.

Now, let's say your store's name is Furniture World and your website address: furnitureworld.com

In addition to conducting keyword research for the word "furniture," you will also have to conduct a separate keyword research for the words "furniture world" as well as the derivation furnitureworld. Also, in order to make your website copy rank higher in search engines and also be more readable for visitors, you will want to conduct keyword research on words related or similar to "furniture." A look into a thesaurus will net you these words as synonyms to the word "furniture."

appliance, bed, bookcase, cabinet, chair, chest, couch, counter, cupboard, desk, dresser, equipment, furnishing, sofa, stool, table, wardrobe

So, aside from your website copy containing keywords or key phrases with the word "furniture," you will also need to insert an occasional synonym for furniture. This is to avoid keyword stuffing, which as will be mentioned later on, is heavily frowned upon by most search engine algorithms, and will most likely result in your website getting banned or being stricken from a search engine's index.

Once you have determined which exact keywords and phrases are heavily used for "furniture" searches, you can start altering your website copy so that it contains those keywords or key phrases you have identified.

All About SEO Secrets for Best SEO Google Site Optimization

When it comes to learning about SEO, a secret can be something intentionally kept classified. Yet, some secrets comprise things which you only learn by surprise. Further, valuable information remains secretive when you simply have not yet accessed the correct channels.

Whether this remains a case of intentional hush-hush or merely circumstantial mystery, the bottom line is that there are numerous things you may not already know about site-optimization.

The "gurus" continue to tell you that you can make money online in thousands of ways. Yet, your true-life experience probably sings a slightly different tune.

Search engine optimization reflects a highly technical matter with about a gazillion factors which also affect your online outcome. Website or page promotional systems need to implement approximately 40 or more pertinent tweaks in order to surpass today's fierce competition for keyword phrases.

In more about SEO developments, updates by Google plus the recent changes to the Panda system have left even some of the more solid online entrepreneurs with additional SEO work to complete. Yet, even without such additional adversity, the goal to establish your particular pages in the top 10 Google listings reflects a monumental task.

Consider this. It is not so much about merely having your page appear on the leading search engine listings, but your content, message, and visual appearance much exist in a way which captures the hearts and minds of viewers.

This latter set of circumstances provides likely grounds for the failure of thousands of online businesses. There are factors not to be taken lightly, and the list is HUGE.

For example:

-- Is mutual or two-way linking still worth its salt in back linking strategy?

-- How do you avoid basic back link blunders without specialized SEO education or expert guidance?

-- What is the true essence of link wheels and how can you maximize their potential powers?

Nearly everything plus almost ANYTHING you can learn about SEO principles can work to your advantage. The average online marketing professional or website owner may try to sidestep the "little" things which comprise website search engine analysis.

However, to avoid the acquisition of top-notch education in regard to site optimization can be your biggest mistake. SEO tips can come to you in almost all shapes and sizes; thus, it is often hard to know which of these seemingly small issues can make or break your Internet income generation efforts.

A great suggestion is to practice safety first. Yet, in this line of work (that is, as an online entrepreneur), the type of security deemed to be of utmost importance remains a rather complex matter.

For instance, your best SEO mix should be one which incorporates:

-- An extremely short, keyword-rich headline tag which varies appropriately for each page of your site...

-- The top FIVE Google-verified keyword phrases for your niche which ALSO demonstrate high-buyer interest...

-- Beautifully executed examples of page content properly laden with semantic phrases plus sequentially relevant heading tags.

Now, about SEO ongoing developments, there is a new informational source currently available which elaborates upon "inside" details for you with easy-to-read, plus highly helpful assistance.

Ethics, Best Practices, and SEO - A Crisis in the Profession

There has been much debate recently on the practice of ethical Search Engine Optimization (SEO). The recent removal of a high profile SEO company from the Google results has plunged the industry into yet another debate on what is ethical and what is not in our profession.

I have been involved in the SEO industry for a few years now and the mention of the word ethics and best practices in what is still an unregulated industry creates a level of confusion the likes of which I have not observed in any other industry. Why does this reluctance to discuss ethics and best practices exist? After all, we call ourselves professionals and as professionals we should strive to be part of an industry which stands for best practices and quality of service.

The confusion seems to come from the way that search engines rank sites. Each search engine has an algorithm which is a complex method of giving a value to a site which will ensure that it is returned in the search results when a relevant keyword is typed into a search engine. These algorithms are kept secret by the search engines for obvious reasons. The SEO industry is highly focused on analyzing these algorithms and using any knowledge gained to modify and rank websites. Ask any two SEO's what they consider to be ethical in their pursuit of top results and you will most likely get two very different answers. Hence, the lack of agreement on what is ethical and what is not.

So where do we start? Our commitment must always start with the client and our responsibilities to them. An ethical company will always demonstrate loyalty and respect to their client. This is true whether they are an SEO, a doctor or an accountant.

Having sound business practices and a professional approach to all that you do then we can move onto the 'search engine guidelines.' All the major search engines and directories publish their own guidelines of use for webmasters. This should be the minimum that any SEO practitioner complies with when working on a client's site. Search engines have a right to protect the integrity of their results and the SEO practitioners should respect those guidelines.

The confusion seems to arrive with the interpretation of the guidelines. One SEO will interpret the rules to mean one thing and another SEO will see it as completely different. The stakes are high and a top ranking in Google for your site is powerful branding and can lead to a major upswing in your business.

SEO practitioners have been classified as 'whitehat,' and 'blackhat.' Whitehat practitioners are the ones that try to stick to search engine guidelines while blackhat operate using more questionable techniques and view the search engines as the 'enemy.' Unfortunately blackhat techniques can sometimes adversely affect the sites ranking and worse, get their client's sites banned.

Blackhats traditionally play to the emotional needs of their clients and often convince them to part with their money without giving clear and specific information on the changes they will make to their sites. If a client is fully aware of the risks and is prepared to buy into short term gain then that is their choice. However, many Blackhat SEO's do not disclose their tactics. Would you hire a CPA who submits your tax return including questionable practices and breaking all the IRS rules? You are the one who will get audited, prosecuted and have to pay huge fines.

Blackhat techniques are just plain bad business practice. They also do the search engines and the search users a huge disservice by contributing to poor quality of results. This adds nothing to the end user experience.

The search engines say that any type of manipulation to get a site ranked is a threat against them and the relevancy of their results. Whitehat practitioners will say that they are not manipulating sites but rather fixing search engine obstacles within a web site. The need for their services is great as many web site designers do not know how to integrate search engine friendly designs.

Last year a prospective customer contacted me after being burned by a "rogue" SEO company who got their site (and others) banned from Google for spam tactics. A few weeks later they were contacted by the same "rogue" SEO company under a new name. Perhaps naively she almost fell for it again. She reasoned that if they had been banned once they would not do anything wrong again! This demonstrates the lack of knowledge that consumers have regarding our industry. They don't know the difference between good and bad SEO. People are being taken advantage of because of their lack of knowledge.

No matter what techniques your SEO uses; 'ethical' , 'whitehat' ,'blackhat' none at all it all boils down to one thing. Doing right by the client? Ethics is often viewed by many in the industry as hype.

I think the focus should be on serving users as opposed to manipulating the search engines. SEO's who concentrate of making the sites the best that they can be for the end user will create a much better longer term affect. The SEOs who chase algorithms and try to game the search engines get burned when there is an algorithm change. Following search engine updates involving an algorithm shift, the industry message boards abound with posts along the lines of "I hate Google, they have killed my site" If these posters had spent more time improving their site for their clients, and the search users, the algorithm updates would be much less stressful for them.

At this time there is no initiative within the industry to create a trade body which sets a code of best practices. It is down to the consumer to practice "buyer beware" and ensure that they practice due diligence in selecting an SEO. They need to use even more caution than they would use to select any other vendor. I also believe the industry has a responsibility to provide education and resources for consumers and help de-mystify the profession.

Great SEO companies share their knowledge willingly. They hide nothing to either clients or search engines. They know that they have a specialized skill and are proud of what they do. They get their results through hard work and perseverance. They also know that to do the job properly takes a lot of time. This is something which most business owners feel they do not have. They are confident that when it comes to hiring a professional, their honest and open approach to their trade will be acknowledged by organizations who only want to work with the best.

The following are some golden rules I have written on choosing an SEO. If the consumer sticks to these rules then they should avoid the practitioners in our industry who give the rest of us a bad name.

o Only work with a company that follows search engine guidelines. (If I could only make one recommendation this would be it). The three main search engines are Google, MSN, and Yahoo. Look on their sites for their webmaster guidelines.

o Only work with a company that documents the SEO process they will use to rank your site

o Only work with a company that provides a written contract outlining their process and their costs

o Get at least four proposals for your site and compare services before you make a decision

o Do not work with a company that offers guarantees of top rankings. Nobody can offer these types of guarantees.

o Do not lock yourself into a contract you cannot get out of if you are not getting results

o Ask for references and follow up with them. If you still have any doubts ask for more. Ensure that references check out. Check that the suggested site is real and that the contact details given check out against the contact details on the site.

o Do not allow any work to be carried out on your site without your approval.

o Do not give the SEO carte blanche to do as they will with your site. It is your site not theirs. It is your responsibility to ensure that the SEO does not apply any techniques that would result in getting your site banned.

o Check the companies BBB (Better Business Bureau) report. Check for membership of any other established trade bodies such as the AMA (American Marketing Association) Many companies claim that they are more reputable because they are part of SEMPO (Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization.) However this is not the case. All that is required to be a member of SEMPO is a $299 annual subscription.

o Do not work with a company that engages in site wide link exchanges. Question their linking methods. Ensure that they only have a policy of linking with on-topic sites. Remember, your site is built for users not for search engines. If your site is about computers and your link to a site that sells children's toys how useful do you think that link will be for your visitors.

o Ask other companies doing well on the Internet who they use for SEO. Always ask about the quality of customer service that is offered. It is not much use having a great SEO if you can never get hold of them.

o If it sounds too good to be true. IT IS!!!

In conclusion the SEO industry is a dynamic growing industry. This rapid growth has created some challenges for the industry. One of these challenges is the perception that outsiders have of SEO practitioners being unethical. To counteract this many SEOs are now promoting themselves as 'ethical SEO.' However, as the industry is unregulated it is up to the consumer of the service to become informed and exercise caution when selecting a SEO vendor. As the demand for SEO continues to grow the number of unethical practitioners calling themselves SEOs will also grow. To protect yourself, take the vendor selection process seriously. Look for vendors who are willing to share knowledge and partner with you to provide the best possible outcome for you business.

SEO - Make Your Website Google Friendly

The exact workings of Google computer programs are kept secret for obvious reasons but basically Google has downloaded the entire internet onto its computers and has indexed and arranged all that information so that it can easily find what you need when you want it.

Now with regard to your SEO what you need to bear in mind is that you need to make it as easy as possible for Google to find your web pages when someone is looking for information you have.

As Google wants to give the best service to its users it only wants to offer relevant search results so you have to make sure every part of your website is relevant to the keywords you want to target.

To make it really clear I like to think of it as labelling, if you label various different parts of your website with your target keywords, Google can easily see that your website is all about a specific subject, and when someone searches for what you offer Google will see your labels and put you right up there with other website that have similar labels on their website.

If think about when you are in a Library, you usually go to a particular section in the Library and start looking at the spines of the books to see if anything looks relevant, the next thing you do it look through the contents of a few books to really get a feel for what is on offer. If you can instantly see what you are after you will investigate further.

So, to make Googles job easier, label all the elements of your web pages with your target keywords and Google will start including your website in its search results.

How to Improve SEO Results on Insurance Related Web Sites

I am just stating a fact that even my own insurance broker related to me. By it's very nature, "insurance" is kind of a boring topic with not a lot of emotional appeal, but it's up to us, the search engine marketer to change that.

It's up to us to find ways to make the topic appeal.

It really does NOT have to be boring at all!

What works well for Insurance sites?

Here are just a few suggestions to get started.

The ideal approach is to create an informational site which is "loaded" with quality information related to your target audience. If it is "farm Insurance" you'll approach it with content of interest (I mean of real interest) to farmers. For "home insurance" you want to write content for the home owner. For "auto insurance", you want an audience who might be interested in getting an insurance quote but they must be, vehicle owners first.

The "Informational Approach" is a great place to start.

Create a site filled with quality informational content.

Consider creating:

* free feature articles

* advice columns

* free tips

* news columns

* humor content

* some tutorials or "how to" type features that deliver plenty of value.

Tread very lightly on the selling angle....and deliver lots of useful free advice. One of the reasons this approach works so well is because you know that most people love to use the Internet for gathering facts, research and advice.

Depending on who your client is, you may want to build content that will start with their own general theme but then expand on it. For the sake of an example, let's work with auto insurance. One likely objective, might be to increase traffic to a site that is meant to generate leads or perhaps the visitor is supposed to fill in a form to get an insurance quote. With this approach you want to make this the smallest and most inconspicuous element.

Resist the urge to promote it the same as 99% of the competing sites do.

For Auto Insurance - Who's the target audience?

We are trying to attract a target audience that "owns an automobile" or someone who "drives a vehicle" and therefore, they may need to insure it. What type of articles and content might be appropriate here? Often at best, all you'll find are insurance sites that are those relating information "about their business", or the "history of their business" or perhaps a page spouting some sales pitch about how they "guarantee the best rates." These will not generally serve your target audiences interests. The visitor needs to find content on the site that is interesting, useful and appealing to them.

1. So start by creating an idea list of topics that might attract a vehicle owner.

Create your own list and make it unique. Remember that you are not just bound to promote "insurance" as a subject. Your ideal audience is simply someone who owns a car and may need insurance. Furthermore, you may need to optimize regionally if your client is only interested in business from the local state or province.

Write articles and choose topics based on "high interest" content.

Here are a few thoughts:

* How about articles on topics like auto detailing

* How to do various types of body work

* Tips on safe driving

* Tips on buying a car

* Advice on selling a car

* How to save money by tuning up your own car

* Price or feature comparisons on new cars

* How about expanding on the safety theme and include info for campers or house trailers

* How about offering commentary on "local news" related issues for driving

* Why not create a few articles on the topic of "classic or show cars?"

* Create an article offering advice on how to handle yourself if involved in a car accident

* How about safety checklists

* Free tips on preventing car theft

* Advice on winter driving

* Give it some thought, there are plenty of ideas

Thinking outside the box, also work to identify other markets beside these that could also mean additional business for the client?

How about "motorcycle insurance" or "truck insurance" or "marine insurance?"

Do you deal in "snowmobile insurance"?

Each of these additional suggestions provides a wealth of many possible topics that you could build volumes of free but useful quality content on.

Wordtracker Research:

How do your chosen topics compare with real-time demand?

As usual, work to identify high performance topics using Wordtracker. It is extremely important to keep your target audience in mind for each article. Whether we are trying to attract fleet operators, truck drivers, purchaser of a new vehicle, parents of teenage drivers, motorcyclists, or whoever.....we really want to fine tune our optimization for the right audience.

If you need some creative insight on researching your real-time audience behavior within Wordtracker, be sure to see my short e-guide called Wordtracker Magic where I reveal my favorite methods for tapping into the very best "windows of opportunity" in mere seconds, instead of spending hundreds of hours of doing research. The techniques here are often eye-openers for those who are looking for original ideas to attract their ideal target audience.

2. Next build the site with easy access to ALL articles right from the front or home page.

Avoid building complicated tables and make sure each page can be easily crawled by search engine robots.

Ideally, look for topics that may be perfect to build several similarly themed pages around. Let's say, that using Wordtracker, you had found that there was a real high demand for the topic of "fender repairs and paint touch up".

Note: The point is, you find one popular topic that several high demand keyword phrases may also relate to. In the example above, if you found that "fender repairs" was popular, you might break it down as follows:

Example List:

* Buick fender repairs

* Oldsmobile fender repair

* Repairing your Toyota fender

* body work for Jeeps

* repair fender damage on your vehicle

* fender repair and matching paint

* Pontiac fender repairs

* Volkswagen fender repair

* body work for Chevrolet

* repair your Camaro's fender

Assuming that "fender repair" and "body work" were in high demand, each of these phrases could be optimized for in a series of different articles. Each article could be a do-it-yourself guide on fender repair for each specific type of vehicle. Each page is therefore going to have different and original content.

Warning: Do not just copy large bodies of text or content and try to re-use it on different pages.

Search engine love fresh, original content that is useful reading.

You will get far better results by creating all original content. Focus on creating truly valuable articles and content that are worthy and useful to the reader. Avoid the danger of duplication - do not create content which is "too similar" and may get you penalized. Your goal is to create lots of useful content that you can be proud of, which in turn will attract your ideal target audience in to your site. There is no penalty for creating quality informational content that delivers value and is also truly relevant for a researched keyword phrase.

3. Search engines love original, useful content - yet also it creates new gateways into your Web site too!

In the bulleted example list above, you could create 10 "tutorial" gateway information pages which act first (by being found to rank high for a popular search term on major search engines) and secondly, (each page is really loaded with useful tutorial content which in itself counts as quality advice) and thirdly, you can then carefully build in click-able text links that will allow your new visitor traffic the option of traveling throughout the site.

Also note that if your true objective is to gather insurance leads or auto insurance quotes, you might try using simple one liner text ads. These work quite well if you come up with simple but appealing copy. The example to the below is an ad idea which is not really a link, but gives you the general idea.

Are You Paying Too Much For Car Insurance?

Click Here to find out INSTANTLY

In Summary:

Emphasis in this one technique is simply to offer really good or useful content. The do-it -yourself car care audience will probably own a car or at least wonder if they indeed have the best insurance rate. Everyone likes the idea of being able to obtain an "instant quote." The key is always to focus on what the target audience really wants, instead of rendering dry, boring old "mission statements" or content that is written strictly from a sales perspective.

One of the Internet's best kept secrets is how to research "behaviors" instead of keywords. Do a search on Google for the e-guide Wordtracker Magic. It's free right now.

In conducting your Wordtracker research, be certain to investigate and identify as many strategies as possible. All you really need, in order to get good to "exceptional results" is just one really good high demand topic, with a number of high KEI keyword phrases related to that same topic or theme. Understand what your ideal target audience is really searching for and then give them what it is that they want, right up front.
