That's not to say that you can't get rankings without using software though. You can indeed, and many do it every day. You will need to focus on building high quality links though, which is the most effective way of building backlinks.

Well the bad news is that no one type of backlink building is the best if used on it's own. The best backlink structure you can build for your main website is one that uses links from several different kinds of sites.

For example, a site with 10 links from video sites, and 10 links from article directories is ready to go out and get 10 links through blog posting. If you were to go back and get another 10 links from the same type of sites, or even worse, the same sites it wouldn't be as effective as if you were to go out and seek links from other link sources.

Once you get a link up and live on a website, you can then use any kind of backlink software you might have to backlink your quality links. This way, they'll be used to make your backlinks even more powerful.
