How many times have you heard the term "Web 2.0"? It's a frequently used term online, especially in relation to online marketing, and although it sounds a bit technical and even downright scary for those new to Internet Marketing, it really isn't as daunting as it seems. I wanted to demystify the term and here is my explanation.
According to the font of all online knowledge, Wikipedia, the official definition is summarised very briefly as:
The term "Web 2.0" is commonly associated with web applications that facilitate interactive information sharing, interoperability, and collaboration on the World Wide Web (Wikipedia Definition).
Basically this means that a Web 2.0 site allows its users to interact with other users or to change website content - in other words it's an Interactive Website (Whereas a non-interactive website limits users to passive viewing of information that is provided to them).
Please indulge me here if you have some Internet experience and know what Web 2.0 is all about, but this article is really intended for the benefit of those who are new to Internet marketing, learning internet marketing and for those who glibly use the term without really understanding what it really means....you know who you are!! So, please bear in mind that we all had to start from somewhere.
Examples Of Web 2.0
Examples of Web 2.0 include web-based communities, hosted services, web applications, social-networking sites, video-sharing sites, blogs, mashups (that last one might be the subject for a future article!!) In general, the term Web 2.0 is associated as the "cover all" term for social networking sites (E.g. Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, Stumbleupon, Digg, etc).
Why is web 2.0 important in a marketing context?
Marketing is simply getting your products and services noticed by as many people as possible and Web 2.0 is all about people connecting with people through social media sites (Exactly what the Internet was intended for in the first place) Need I say More? - the two are a match made in heaven.
I know that Web 2.0 is not really a new concept any more but the Web 2.0 environment is constantly changing and evolving, there is simply so much to continue learning about social media marketing that finding some time to dedicate to it can be difficult. However, just an hour or 2 each day dedicated to learning about and managing your Social Networking sites will have an extremely positive effect on your marketing efforts.
Why succumb to all the internet hype surrounding social marketing.
Well quite simply, it's a brilliant method for connecting with your market. In what other way can your customers find you so cost effectively and get to know, trust and respect you? Regular updating and interaction on your websites will dramatically improve your Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and the regular use of portable files, like PDF's and video files, on your social networking sites will help your product's or services visibility. Quite frankly, it's a win - win situation.
In summary, Web 2.0 simply refers to a wide range of Interactive Websites that allow you to share information and communicate more easily. It's a fantastic way of connecting on a personal level with your market, improving your website Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) which in turn greatly enhances your online presence and the visibility of your products or services.
Used properly, Web 2.0 is a highly effective method for getting your marketing message seen online.
