There seems to be a giant conflict of opinion about what the internet was supposed to be and what it actually is. Years ago the internet was a place to share information, explore information and promote technology. Now the internet has turned into everyone's personal money making machine. If you want information you have to sift through the useless search results trying to sell you something, something that you know is available for free somewhere...
If I wanted to locate some state forms, why would I pay for them when the state offers them on their website for FREE? There is no end to selling free stuff on the web. Some are simply capitalizing on laziness. It is a lot easier to click the #1 result in the search engine results page, pay some cash and get on your way, thank you Mr. SEO.
How is it that the search results are the most relevant search result for what you are looking for? You can be very specific and still come up with bogus. Have any guesses? Over all, general search engines serve up more revenue than information. If you need information you better think about pay engines that search documents, thank you Mr. SEO.
I am very interested in SEO; don't get me wrong I really love the whole process of optimization and marketing. The analysis of data, the tracking of links, the plan of attack, I almost feel like a super secret agent who is privy to top secret documents.
We do have to sit back and ask ourselves one question, are we the ones wrecking the internet? Are we making it a punch bowl of junk results with a few lemon widgets of useful information? Truth is no, for the most part we help legitimate businesses get a foot hold in the online market. Google has begun it's assault on junk results with it's new Jagger update, so we should see the web start to clean up a bit. I am very excited about the new changes in technologies on the web; the best is yet to come.
