The Best Way to Advertise a Small Business

I'm a small business owner and the best way to advertise a small business is to focus on a few marketing activities that deliver results.

When you start advertising your small business, it's a good idea to try a few marketing activities - but once you hit on a couple activities that work for you, capitalize on them and do them very, very well.

That's what I did.

For me, I found the best way to advertise my small business was building a large website with a blog and then several small, focused microsites. I target nearly every page in my site to one of the geographic locations I serve coupled with one other keyword.

Over time, I've built a flagship website with hundreds of web pages - each optimized specifically for one (or two) locations coupled with a keyword my prospective customers search for.

This is one very effective method of local search advertising.

The Fleet of Websites Approach

I took this approach one step further by building a few microsites that focus on a specific service I offer. These microsites are detailed in the information offered and are tightly optimized for a small set of keywords.

What I now have is a fleet of small business websites that attract free traffic from the search engines.

Don't build too many sites - be sure you have the time and resources to make every site excellent. More importantly, don't publish the same content on more than one website. Make each site its own.

My Overall Focused Marketing Strategy

Essentially, my focused strategy in advertising my small business is using established SEO techniques (all white hat) by primarily publishing plenty of content targeting my specific prospective customers. I publish tons of content on my websites and off my websites (like on EzineArticles and elsewhere).

Why Having a Flagship Website Is a Great Start?

Once you have a large website (or a fleet of websites) that attract a decent flow of targeted traffic, you'll get new customers. Having such an effective website is the foundation for all other online marketing activities.

For example, if you participate in Facebook or forums - you can direct interested people to your website. When you don't have a large and interesting website, you don't have an online "headquarters" as a place to direct prospective customers.

Furthermore, publishing plenty of great content (informative, tutorial, and/or entertaining), does wonders for converting website visitors. If visitors like what you publish, they are more inclined to want to look more closely in becoming your customer.

If you're looking for the best way to advertise a small business, I can't overstate the effectiveness of a large website accompanied with some targeted microsites - all of which are well optimized for the search engines. Most importantly, publish tons of fantastic content on all your sites - this is the best proven technique for getting free traffic.

Be Patient With This Small Business Advertising Method

Building a large website that gets a lot of traffic takes time. Be patient. Don't get daunted with traffic ups and downs. As long as you publish great content, get some backlinks to your site, you will get more traffic in the long run.

Once you have a large small business website working for you, then build up your advertising campaign from there - using your website as your advertising foundation.

If your small business serves particular locations, then be sure you do proper local SEO on every Web page and every website you have so you attract your local customers.

If you're getting traffic to your business website, but still no new customers, then you have a conversion problem. There are simple conversion techniques that can dramatically improve your business site's conversion rate.
